The science
What the technology is cleared to do.
Erchonia’s body-contouring lasers sit in the FDA’s “fat reducing low level laser” category (product code OLI, 21 CFR 878.5400) — intended use: non-invasive body circumference reduction.
The foundational milestone was the De Novo classification of the Erchonia ML Scanner — the first non-thermal low-level laser cleared for circumferential fat reduction — which classified the device type into Class II for “non-invasive dermatological aesthetic treatment for the reduction of circumference of hips, waist and thighs.” That decision established an entirely new regulatory category and defined the clinical pathway for non-invasive laser fat loss. Subsequent generations — red (635 nm), green (532 nm) and violet (405 nm) — have continued to expand indications through rigorous clinical validation, including the first FDA clearance for a violet laser in circumference reduction.

The cellular mechanism of action
Photobiomodulation — specific wavelengths interacting with mitochondrial chromophores.

Mitochondrial activation
Laser photons are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase within the mitochondria. Peer-reviewed evidence shows activation of this chromophore increases ATP production and upregulates cyclic AMP — a cascade that activates cytoplasmic lipase within adipocytes.

Triglyceride breakdown
Activated lipase breaks intracellular triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol. This is metabolic liberation, not cellular destruction.

Transient pore formation
Electron microscopy shows low-level laser exposure produces transient micropores in adipocyte membranes, through which the liberated lipids pass into the extracellular space. No thermal disruption of surrounding tissue, no fibrosis, no scarring.

Adipocyte deflation
Once the intracellular content exits, adipocytes reduce in volume and circumference reduction follows — collapse, not necrosis. Supported by SEM fat-cell imaging, MRI T1 and T2 validation and peer-reviewed human trials.
